Those applying for USA green cards are in effect seeking
to live in the US on a permanent basis.
Apart from the green card lottery system, there are
three main avenues through which green cards may be
acquired: (1). through strong family ties with a US
citizen or legal permanent resident. This would require
the petitioning for green card status by a US citizen
spouse, parent, child, brother or sister of the alien
beneficiary. Likewise, a US permanent resident spouse
and parent may petition for their alien relatives to
obtain USA green cards (2) through employment in the
USA. Aliens of extraordinary ability, outstanding
professors or researchers, multinational executives or
managers, aliens of exceptional ability, skilled and
unskilled workers and certain special immigrants may all
apply for permanent residence (USA green cards) in the
states (3) through investment and employment creation:
This applies to those willing to invest a standard of
$1,000,000 (and a minimum of £500,000 in designated
‘targeted employment areas’) in a US business that also
creates employment.
Once a petition for
green card status has been approved, the alien may then
apply for a visa conferring permanent residence in the
