A foreigner may acquire the right
to live and work in the United States by acquiring permanent
residence in the US. This would usually be as a result
of employment or family ties. This is known as US
green card status.
Temporary visas such as the H-1B,
L-1 and E visas provide a platform to change one's
status to that of an immigrant green card holder, although
the initial intent to enter and remain in the US must
be temporary.
Permanent resident status may be acquired
directly from employment categories such as business
investments, persons of extraordinary ability and other
people interested in pursuing a career in the states, granting them USA citizenship.
Spousal relationships and certain
family ties create another source for a USA green card application.
